I am officially announcing that I am running to retain the 2nd Ward Council seat in Ferguson.
2023 was a good year, but not without many challenges. Ferguson finally has two strong leaders in place, a dedicated and experienced City Manager and Police Chief, and there has been a lot happening for the good of our city. With a fresh year upon us, we need to keep the momentum going. The time is critical to support our new leaders. We need to “stay the course”.
In many different ways, our city has been turning the corner in the nine months that I’ve been on Council, but there is still much, much more to do. I am the Council person that gives us the best chance of continuing our momentum, and not derailing the progress we are making at this critical time.
Hiring the right City Manager is probably the most important job of the City Council, and we got a great one – John Hampton. He has a 25-year history working in our city and is the leader Ferguson needs to continue the momentum and progress we are making. We have much, much more to do, and John Hampton is the person to get it done.
Our ability to hire Hampton, I believe, is a testament to what we’ve tried to do on the Council. By moving beyond the division, by focusing on inclusivity, we were able to convince John Hampton that he would have the support needed to be able to stay as our permanent City Manager.
When I was asked to fill the open seat, I made it clear at the very start that I wouldn’t be part of one side or the other. I would only do what I thought best for ALL of Ferguson, and that I believed very strongly in inclusivity. I continue to believe that more connects us than separates us. That ALL residents want safe neighborhoods for their families and children. That ALL residents want effective, Constitutional policing to keep us safe.
And we’ve made it work. The council hasn’t agreed on everything, but the great majority of the bills we’ve passed have been unanimous, including the vote to hire John Hampton. We’ve managed to reach compromises that serve our City as a whole, not just one faction or the other.
I am running because Ferguson can’t risk derailing its progress. We need to stay the course.
So please plan to vote on April 2nd to retain me as your Ward 2 Ferguson Council person, and I can promise that I will continue to work for ALL of Ferguson, to help our city continue moving forward.
I look forward to meeting with residents at the Lions Club on Tuesday, January 16th, from 5 pm - 6:30 pm.
